Servers and workstations
require different support methods. Generally speaking servers are more difficult
to support as they are more complicated than workstations and have a greater
impact. Servers also have the ability to create downtime for a greater number of
users, as they contain resources that multiple users will access.
Some companies ask that their employees setup their
own computers, which is very undesirable. Most people do not understand the
complexities involved in setting up workstations and it adds stress to the work
environment. Typically, what happens is the most knowledgeable person is
'elected' as the in house IT person. Because of this he or she will run around
doing IT work, rather than the job they were hired to do.
Other companies hire junior IT staff - which is
a good idea, but remember they will be learning on your systems. They will
also probably not deviate from the current setup, even if it is cumbersome
and difficult to manage. In this scenario, we encourage using us

any required changes and perform knowledge transfer to the junior administrator. Then
the administrator can call on us when needed. This is typically the best model
for companies with more than 25 staff members as the junior administrator can do
the day to day work.
